How Much Do I Actually Write?

How Much Do I Actually Write?

Hello, everyone! ðŸ¤—

I hope you all are having a great summer so far!

Today, I wanted to reach out and answer a question that a few people have asked me:

As a young author, how much do you actually write per day?

In this blog post, you'll find a sneak peek into my writing life as I share some word counts to answer this question. I hope you leave feeling a bit more inspired about your own projects, as well!

With that said, let's jump right into the juicy word counts and writing schedules!😉

For the current year, here are my word counts per month (to be clear, these are the words that went specifically toward my WIP):

Month

Word Count

January

7,859

February

8,064

March

7,430

April

9,809

May

10,666

June

12,778

Yay! For me, these numbers are exciting! I know it's not that much compared to other authors (I keep seeing people with 50,000 or higher a month!) but for my schedule, I tend to have only a few hours a day dedicated to writing. However, during the school year, my homework naturally demands the first priority (unfortunately ðŸ˜…) so I sometimes have to wait until the weekends to work. Between school, church, friends, family, and horses, I usually range between 7,000 and 15,000 a month. To answer the original question, this means an average of about 500 words a day.

Honestly, it's not very much, and I'm always surprised when I actually finish a novel. ðŸ˜‚ But, looking back, it just goes to show what consistency and baby steps can bring about in the long run!

As a quick side note, for my fellow writers out there, I've found that it can be rather stressful striving for a lofty word count goal, especially if your schedule doesn't allow for many hours of writing. I tend to get stressed out often about fulfilling my daily goals when it comes to writing. And let's just say that pounding on the keyboard and racking your brain desperately for ideas does not yield the best results. ðŸ˜‘

So lately, I've been trying to slow down, enjoy the process, and remember to look at the big picture and not to zoom up on one particular writing session. Even if I only get 200 words down in one day (which does happen often), that means I can possibly reach around 6,200 words in a month if I stay consistent! Little things add up.

And this goes for you, too, friend. Be kind to yourself, allow breaks, and keep taking baby steps. Whatever project you may be working on... I know you can do this! ðŸ¥°

Well, I best be getting back to my books, but I hope you enjoyed this sneak-peek into my author life. Keep an eye out for future updates or more posts like this!
